You and your cronies try to intimidate me with your loud street talk aimed in my direction. You refuse to move to either side when I approach you on the sidewalk. I have to walk in the street or the gravel because you’re standing in the middle of the sidewalk, refusing to move until after I’ve moved past you. You puff out your chest and throw back your shoulders whenever we encounter each other. You attempt to intimidate me. I avoid making eye contact with you so there won’t be an incident. I get it. It’s all a power play, trying to show me you’re the dominate alpha. The biggest, badass on the street.
You are a 20 something male. You are black. You are angry. You hate me just because of the color of my skin. I get it. You are taking your anger out on me. You blame me for some perceived injustice you received at the hand of a white person somewhere in your past. You regard me the way the black community loathes being treated by the white community. Just because you think I’m an easy target.
But I’m not an easy target. I will fight back. I’m a momma grizzly wrapped in a soft, white shroud. Fuck with me or my child and I’ll have no problem putting a 9mm bullet in your thick, reverse racist skull. You see, racism is a two way street. I don’t hate you because of your skin color. I don’t hate you for your choice in music. Or the clothes you wear. The way you walk. Or the car you drive.
You disgust me simply because of the way you treat me. Because of your preconceived idea that I owe you something. I despise you for the individual that you are; making yourself feel better by menacing me with your aggressive body posturing. Nothing more. If you treated me with kindness, I would respond with kindness. But you chose to treat me with hatred in your heart. And you wonder why people hate you back.
It’s your choice to treat me and others that way.
It's my choice to ignore you and not give you any power over me.

Harassment and intimidation are just that, irrespective of the skin color of the protagonists. Does this young man ever say anything to try and justify his antipathy?
ReplyDeleteYou are exactly right, Bryan. And the only thing we did was move into this apartment complex. It's an even mix of black, white and Hispanic. Just last night, he was harassing a couple of Mexican guys. So, I'm thinking he just hates everyone that isn't black.
DeleteThe so called minds of the small minded are filled with excuses for their need to show some type of superiority, regardless of the color they reside within. In dealing with the public daily, I find that superiority attitudes are usually developed by an inadequacy in some area and used as a front. Still, there are those that simply hate, for no other reason than to hate, again, in all color arenas. St. Louis has tempted me to also write a post concerning this, but I really don't want to fight the small minded comments I'm sure it would receive. I understand your plight and don't envy your situation. Unfortunately, you are not alone, especially in the inner cities of the United States. Well written, my friend.
ReplyDeleteI can't argue with you, I have found that small minds that behave like that either hate for the sheer sake of hating or are trying to hide their fears or insecurities. I almost feel sorry that they live their lives so filled with hate that they miss the beauty around them.
DeleteThat whole St. Louis thing is a mess but I don't think it'll be the last. I would hasten to say that a renewed race war is rearing it's ugly head.
I don't understand why these people feel they need to direct their hatred toward a white woman with a small child. It doesn't make sense! :-/ Grrrr!
ReplyDeleteI have never found much sense in hatred or racism. But like Rich said, "small minds."
DeleteDamn. Straight.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Toby. :D He could almost qualify for your dumbass of the day.
DeleteGood post.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I know I can't be the only one feeling this way.
DeleteYou are so much braver than I. I would never leave the apartment. :( I hope you can get away from this soon.
ReplyDeleteIf I never left the apartment, Collin would never make it to school and we'd starve. :D And they would win. I'm all about not letting the bad guy win. ;)
DeleteWell put. Hatred and intimidation know no skin color. We see if from people of all races. It's senseless and sad.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, Phil! I'm sure you see it a lot in such a huge city. It reminds me of why I like smaller towns. It's hard to be that racist when everyone knows you and you have to see/deal with them daily.
DeleteRacism isn't only a white on black thing, anyone can be full of hate and ignorance no matter what color their skin is. Great piece, very deep and thought provoking. I hope all this nonsense gets settled real soon for you my friend.
ReplyDeleteSo true, MJ. Racism and hatred knows no boundaries; it can be anywhere. I'm glad you enjoyed it. :D
DeleteThat's sizzling writing, eloquent, furious in a silky smooth and classy way, relentless and persuasive - the pen is indeed mightier than the posturing of the haterz and their myopic view of humanity.
ReplyDeleteYou made my day, Rexy. Thank you so much for that!
